“For the joy of human love
Brother, sister, parent, child
Friends on earth
And friends above
For all gentle
Thoughts and mild.
Lord of all to thee we raise
This our joy ful hymn of praise”
– For the Beauty of the Earth

Gentle thoughts and mild
Joy of human love
The beauty of the earth
O Lord, we praise You
Thanksgiving Day
Hallelujah!

Sempiternal

November 25, 2019

I pat my dashboard
Thank God for my car
‘Unstoppable’
Then pat my wrist
The same name

I am eternal
My words
Actions
Hair
Ideas which flow
Like the Hiawassee River
Over gray boulders like elephants
Posed in water as a family
Bathing

I pour water over my own back
Think of renewable resources
Of you and me

Detente

November 24, 2019

They shoot at each other
Across the aisle
Refuse to shake hands
Vilify

In a country founded
On goodwill
And gratitude

How can we be
Proud of you,
O Senators and Representatives?

You’ve betrayed us
Reduced dialogue
To argument

When all we want
Are Native Americans
Who graciously
Show us
How to grow corn

We Gather Together

November 23, 2019

Polished waxed wood
Hosts a pumpkin
Pilgrim figures
In a scene

Our reflections
Stare back at us
As we sing
Pick up each kernel
Begin

Three thanksgivings
Boiled down
To a rich roux
Each bite
Savored on our lips

Thread the Needle

November 22, 2019

Find the needle
Hold it in one hand
The thread with the other,
Cut sharp and licked flat

Focus
Concentrate
Thread the needle
Through the wee hole

Pull it through
Wet your fingers
And twist a knot

Sew

Picking Stars

November 17, 2019

I rise from the tent
Wrestle my feet
out of the sleeping bag
Stumble towards the embers
Still burning
My eyes adjust
And my neck tilts back
Eyes fill with tears
In Bryce Canyon
Stars!
I begin picking
Place each in my basket
One by one
I select and reach
One by one
They glow in my palm
One by one
They overflow
Will last
Til the end of time

Serendipity

November 17, 2019

“You plan the picnic”, all agreed
Cheese, bread, wine, sausage, fruit, nuts, and
chocolate!
“No problem “, I squealed in delight
Rainbows arched over misty sea and cliff
Irish music danced from the radio
We drove past sheep
Thatched roofs
Border collies
“But where?” we all pondered.
“”There!”, I cried
Stones
Ancient
Stacked
A home
We spread our feast inside what once was a cottage
It became our home as we stood, sat on grass,
Imagined who lived in such a tiny hut
Now roofless
What their lives were like..
“This is damn good cheese”, my daddy exclaimed
Taking another bite.
He was right.

The Hobby

November 16, 2019

Middle class
Upper
I acquired a hobby
I hitchhiked
Alone
Across states
My body

Slept in
Semi berths
Safe era
No folly

Malaise

November 15, 2019

onomatopoeia
You weigh me down
Paralysis
Of nightmare
Shackled
Bound

Touchstone

November 15, 2019

I press you to my lips
Ancient one
Kiss your sepia
Pigment
Older than the sun

You are cold
When I am hot
Warm when
I am not

I hear your heart
Beat
Ocean roar

Fissure
Glacier
Tectonic quartz

You live in my car
Organic matter
Morphed into stone
A tree, a tatter

Of torn bark
And edges
Giant rings

Now golden
Touchstone of time
Smooth and worn
